"A small gem of a dual memoir in which a former U.S. Navy riverboat commander
and a young Vietnamese woman tell amazing, intersecting tales of war and peace." Kirkus Reviews "In 1967 a young American riverboat commander on the Mekong River rescued a wounded Vietnamese child, and thereafter both lives were quietly woven together. The book that results alternates his story with hers. Both voices, like Vietnam itself, linger in our memory long after."AudioFile Peter Huchthausen, a river patrol officer on Vietnam's Mekong River Delta in 1967, rescued a badly wounded Vietnamese child, Nguyen Thi Lung. He and his men arranged for the girl's treatment and education, only to lose track of her when her town was overrun by the North Vietnamese during the Tet Offensive. After the war, Lung led a difficult and shadowy life under the communist regime until she managed to get the attention of a reporter for United Press International, who published Lung's story and assisted her departure from Vietnam, while Huchthausen sponsored her entry into the United States. In alternating chapters, Huchthausen and Lung recall the experience of war on the Mekong River while Lung recalls the terrifying years that followed. Echoes of the Mekong casts a fresh light on the American involvement in Vietnam as it follows two people caught in the war from youth to maturity. Lloyd James hails from the Midwest. He received a B.A. in theater from a small liberal-arts college in New Mexico. He acts in the theater when his schedule permits and spends much of his free time working in his garden. He lives in Virginia with his wife and son. MARGUERITE GAVIN grew up on the Chesapeake Bay. She holds an M.F.A. in acting and a B.F.A. in theater. An actress working in theater and audiobook narration, she is also artistic director of a youth theater program. She lives in the Washington, D.C., area with her husband and son.
